MODULE ONE: LESSON TWO

selecting your fonts

Fonts are like the voice of your website. they help tell your story before anyone reads a word. Choosing the right fonts can make your site feel romantic, playful, elegant, or bold, depending on your vibe.

In this lesson, we’ll explore how to pick fonts that complement your brand, keep your site readable, and create a beautiful, cohesive look. I’ll also share tips on font pairing and where to find great font options.

Happy with the Fonts?

You’re all set! The fonts included with your template were carefully chosen to fit your genre and create the perfect mood for your website. Feel free to keep them just as they are. no changes needed if you love the look!

why fonts matter:

Fonts influence how easy and enjoyable your website is to read. The right fonts set the tone and personality of your author brand — from whimsical and fun to sleek and professional.

Using too many fonts or fonts that are hard to read can make your site feel messy or confusing. Keeping your fonts consistent and simple helps readers focus on your content and feel connected to your style.

HOW TO choose your fonts

Limit yourself to 2 or 3 fonts total:

  • One for headings (this can be decorative or bold)

  • One for body text (simple and easy to read)

  • Optional: a third for accents or callouts

Match your genre and vibe:

  • Romcom authors might like playful or handwritten fonts

  • Dark romance authors may want sleek, elegant serif fonts

  • Contemporary romance authors often use clean, modern fonts

Test readability:

  • Make sure your body font is easy on the eyes, especially at smaller sizes. Avoid overly decorative fonts for paragraphs.

WHERE TO FIND FONTS

Squarespace built-in fonts: Plenty of great options included and easiest to use.
Google Fonts: A free library with hundreds of fonts you can easily add to your site.

tip: Want to use your Squarespace template fonts in Canva? Head to the Resources Vault — I’ve linked all the built-in fonts for easy access!

Creative Fabrica, Creative Market, Etsy: Great places to find unique fonts, many with commercial licenses.

*Important: Unless you’re an experienced web designer, it’s best to stick with Squarespace’s built-in fonts. Using custom fonts from external sources will usually require adding custom CSS code to your site. If you’re interested in adding custom fonts via code, don’t worry, I cover how to do this in detail in the Bonus Module: Custom CSS.

TIP: An Easier Way to Explore Fonts

If you want a quicker, more visual way to browse all of Squarespace’s built-in fonts, check out the Squarespace Font Directory by Strong Sites.

This free directory lets you preview every font available in Squarespace — no need to scroll endlessly through menus. Even better, it shows which fonts are also available in Canva, so you can keep your website and social media designs visually consistent without having to buy or upload fonts manually.

If you use Canva to create graphics, promo materials, or teaser images, this tool helps you easily match your fonts for a cohesive, professional look across your entire brand.

Action Steps

  1. Choose 2–3 fonts — heading, body, optional accent.

  2. Match your genre and vibe.

  3. Check readability for body text.

  4. Save your picks for later.
