MODULE FOUR: LESSON ONE
customizing your about page
Your About page is your chance to introduce yourself to readers in a way that feels genuine, approachable, and on-brand. It’s often one of the most-visited pages on an author’s website, so while it doesn’t need to be long, it should leave readers feeling like they know you a little better.
In this lesson, we’ll walk through how to personalize your About page using the template structure, and I’ll share some optional ideas to make it feel even more engaging.
Step 1: Replace the Placeholder Bio
Locate the text block that holds your About section.
Write a short bio (1–2 paragraphs) that includes:
Who you are.
What you write (genres, tropes, or themes).
A glimpse of your personality (keep it warm and reader-friendly).
Example: “I’m a romance author who writes small-town love stories filled with humor, heart, and a little bit of sass. When I’m not writing, you can usually find me curled up with coffee and a stack of books.”
Step 2: Add Your Author Photo
Replace the placeholder image with a professional or on-brand photo of yourself.
This doesn’t have to be a studio headshot — it can be cozy, outdoorsy, bookish, or whatever fits your vibe.
Make sure the image is high-quality and framed well.
Step 3: Include Optional Sections (if relevant)
You can expand your About page with additional blocks or sections. Here are some options:
Awards & Recognition: Add a simple list or small section if you’ve won writing awards or been a bestseller.
Media Features: Showcase podcasts, interviews, or articles where you’ve been featured.
Fun Facts: Share 3–5 quirky tidbits (your favorite book boyfriend, coffee order, or hobbies).
Stay Connected: Add social media links or a mini newsletter sign-up form so readers can easily follow you.
Step 4: Edit or Rearrange Sections
Squarespace allows you to drag and drop sections. Move optional sections up or down depending on what you want readers to see first.
If your template includes a block you don’t need (for example, a placeholder for awards), delete it so the page stays clean.
Step 5: Format for Readability
Keep your text short and scannable — break it into small paragraphs or bullet points.
Use headings for optional sections (like “Fun Facts” or “In the Media”).
Preview the page on both desktop and mobile to make sure spacing and images look good.
Action Steps
Write or update your short author bio.
Choose an author photo or brand imagery you want to feature.
Decide if you want to include any optional sections like awards, media features, or fun facts.
Once you’ve completed your About page, you’re ready to move on to Lesson Two: The Contact Page.
